Prior to 1982, Raffles Institution was a full school offering both secondary and pre-university education. In 1982, the pre-university section moved to form a separate institution called Raffles Junior College.

On 1 Jan 2009, the two schools were re-integrated into one school - Raffles Institution. The RI (Year 1-4) section comprises the secondary school students while the RI (Year 5-6) section comprises the junior college students.
